The Brothers Strong Slay the Dragon of Talbog

The King of Kander, old and wise, with three daughters, the most beautiful maidens in the land, proclaimed that the man who brings the head of the Talbog Dragon to him may have the daughter of his choosing as a wife. The three sons of Elborn the Strong, wanting a royal title, land, and some royal tail, went on the mighty journey to slay the mighty Dragon or Talbog!

Anzo the Tall, with a mighty lance and long blond hair, Herald the Stout, short and broad welding a great axe, and Elric the Mighty with a fiery red beard, welding the ancestral sword Stan. The Brothers Strong trudged through deep swamps and climbed high mountains crossing the land to Talbog and the abode of the Great Dragon.

The mighty Dragon of Talbog, said to be fifty feet long, with eyes the size of heads, and wings that could summon hurricanes. Slaying it would be a great feat but for the Brothers Strong it would be a Tuesday.

As the Brothers Strong Approached the Dragon it woke. It wasn’t as big as legend told but big it still was, at least thirty feet long, with dark green scales, large wings,  six foot horns, a row of green feathers down its back, feathers sticking out from the back sides of its head, and amber eyes. The Dragon looked at the Brothers Strong, blinked, then wiped its eyes.

“There it is!” Herald exclaimed, “The fowl beast.”

The Dragon looked at Herald, sniffed, itself then, shrugged.

“Such a massive beast!” Elric said, “It’s head will look good on my wall.”

The Dragon just looked at them.

“And I will be the one to slay this beast!” Anzo proclaimed. Holding his lance high, the tall Anzo charged at the Dragon. The lance struck the Dragon’s hide and broke. The Dragon looked down at Anzo. Holding his broken lance, Anzo looked up, turned and ran.

Hiding behind his brothers Anzo pushed Herald saying: “You do it.”

Herald stepped forward proclaiming: “This mighty axe was forged by Dwarves, and imbued by a great wizard with Elven magic!”

The Dragon looked at Herald, placed it’s hand in front of him. Taking the challenge, Herald, with a mighty warrior scream, swung his mighty axe down hitting the Dragon on the second knuckle of its middle finger. Herald looked at his chipped and bent ax, at the Dragons toe, uninjured, then up at the Dragon, and ran.

Hiding behind Elric “Your turn.” Herald said, pushing Elric forward. “You’re the strong one.” Anzo added.

Elric stepped forward proclaiming: “Foolish brothers! Of course such a foul scuttling beast would have a hide thick as a tree!” He turned to his brothers. “You must strike the soft spots, like its eyes or it’s maw!” He turned toward the Dragon. “Evil, foul, filthy beast! Demon rejected from hell!” he unsheathed his sword. “This ancestral sword has slain many a man and beast and it shall be bathed in your putrid blood!”

The Dragon’s eyes narrowed. It opened its mouth revealing its soft maw to Elric. Elric walked to the Dragon’s open mouth. “Such foul breath but I shall extinguish it!”, he  stabbed at the roof of the mouth. The sword bent and broke. Elric looked at his broken sword, tears in his eyes. The Dragon grabbed Elric, he looked up at the Dragon, screaming: “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it! , Please don’t eat me!” The Dragon, ignoring Elric’s plea, bit off his head, spat it out, then used the broken blade of the sword to pick its teeth.

The two brothers looked at Elric’s head rolling towards them. They screamed like children, dropped their broken weapons and fled.

The brothers took a different route home, a much shorter one. After three days they arrived at the court of the Wise King of Kander. “You two survived?” The king asked with shock. Slumping back on his throne, pinching the bridge of his nose the king complained: “I pay that lazy Dragon too damn much.”

The brothers were never seen again, the King claimed they never returned.
